The Market is Open

This post expired on April 20, 2023.

Greetings All:

Market pickup Thursday was fun and if you weren’t there you missed: a good time, a great deal on Goat Milk and the revelation that yes, Mary Drisdell, who was our Farmer of the Week and owner of Patchwork Pastures, is our own Market Manager! I told you she is a woman of many talents!

If you want to skip reading my musings, which do include Market News, Weekly Specials, Farmer of the Week information, little known facts and tidbits about ‘this and that’ then click Take me to the Market.

Market News

Weekly Specials: Goat Milk from Little Tot’s Estate will be available Buy One – Get One Free again this week! Rusty is a highly respected Breeder of those fantastic milk producing, adorable little Nigerian Dwarf Goats. in addition, he is a well respected judge and a Showman of the Breed. As a result of his knowledge, experience and breeding expertise, his kids sell quickly (goat kids – not children kids!) Many more kids have found new homes this past week, so additional Goat Milk will be available this week! (Many Mamas (Does) in milk and not enough babies to drink all of it!) (All Goat Milk is labeled for ‘Pet Consumption’ as required by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and is the only way raw milk can legally be sold in the state of Georgia.)

It is rare that we get emails telling us how much you like a item! Since Market pickup this past Thursday, 3 folks have let us know how impressed they are with this product! The Black Lab learned his lesson last week – the one about NOT drinking from my glass – and now patiently (or not) sits by the fridge and lets me know it is time for his milk after he finishes his breakfast and dinner! Yep! He has me trained very well! I have started making my Kefir with Goat Milk and it is awesome! Dudley is also enjoying his daily ration of this healthy, probiotic drink! Order some today and Thursday night you and your ‘pets’ can be enjoying delicious, fresh and smooth-as-silk goat milk.

Phoenix Gardens is offering a GREAT deal just in time for planting! 6 Veggie Seedlings or 3 Herb Seedlings for $10.00! (Note: for those that purchased 6 seedlings last week, Gwendolyn or Brennan will be contacting you to arrange an addition to your order since this deal wasn’t available last week! Wow what great folks!!) One other Note about this deal: When you review your order at check out, you MUST indicate the Seedlings you want included in the deal! This is done below the item, in the window entitled PRODUCT COMMENT. If you put it in the ORDER Comment Section, the system only sends the information to the Market Managers.

Farmer of the Week

This week we will be featuring 2 Farmers/Growers/Artisans as our Farmers of the Week.

Dena Place of Good Shepherd Herbals will be at the Market offering her expertise on the use of Herbal Medicinal Teas, Salves, Tinctures and Tonics. Interested in alternative remedies for everything to bumps and bruises to soothing that upset tummy? This is a great opportunity to speak with a wise woman who has been making and using alternative herbal therapies for years.
Dena and her husband Steve moved from San Francisco to Georgia 20 years ago to find a more simple way to live. Their goal of self-sufficiency has included their farm on which rabbits, goats, chickens and vegetables are raised to meet the family’s needs. In keeping with their commitment to live a more simple life …
To quote Dena: “As various health issues arose in my family I wanted alternatives to the over-the-counter drugs. I researched and studied and put my hand to making tinctures, salves, and syrups. As our family grew in number and need so did my “family product line”. The family needed cold and flu remedies, little ones needed salve for their bumps and bruises, teenagers needed something for their pimples, pregnant daughters-in-heart needed a help for their growing bellies, and grand-babies needed relief for their diaper rash and eczema. In the meantime, I was getting older and realized the need for extra calcium and endocrine support so I came up with a delicious herbal tea blend. We have been selling these products in and around our community for the past couple of years….” and now we are fortunate to have her products available at Heirloom Living Market! Come and meet Dena and learn about the benefits of using herbs!

Gwendolyn Washington of Phoenix Gardens will also join us at Market pickup! She and her husband Brennan have created a sustainable working ‘mini farm’ right here in Lawrenceville! Phoenix Gardens has received the Certified Naturally Grown certification. In addition, their laying hens have been certified as Animal Welfare approved. Gwendolyn will be explaining these certifications as well as offering some items for sale. Come learn!

About our Farmers/Growers/Artisans

This week we continue with a brief look at a few more of our great group of “Providers” for Heirloom Living Market – lilburn.locallygrown.net.

Back River Farm is located in Loganville and Ricky Brown -Farmer Brown – to you and me, uses his vast knowledge and gardening talent to grow vegetables and fruits and offers them at local Markets! Farmer Brown has been featured in articles by Georgia Organics and his Farm meets all of the qualifications and carries the Certified Naturally Grown seal. Ricky will be joining us as Farmer of the Week sometime in May!

Orobianco is located in Snellville. Maria comes from the region of Campania in Italy, where mozzarella was first made in the XII century. The Cheese Maker, Massimo is originally from Palermo, Sicily. Together they created Orobianco which is Italian for White Gold. They offer the best fresh mozzarella and original mozzarella creations locally!

For the past 30 years Massimo has worked in 2 very different industries – graphic design and restaurants! When he met Maria, a self-proclaimed food and cheese lover, Massimo realized that he could combine his 2 passions and create something unique…and Orobianco was born! Massimo has studied and trained with two ‘casari’ (cheese makers) learning the technology from one of the oldest Italian dairy-making manufacturers. During his time spent with Gianni Rizzi in New York, he gleaned the secrets necessary to make real, fresh mozzarella. The secrets, the understanding of the technology and Massimo’s skill and passion has led him to fashion the original creations that are now the signature products of Orobianco. My favorite is the Smoked Scamorza – that by the way I do NOT share with Dudley!

…a little of this and a little of that…

Mary and I believe it is important to understand the importance of eating locally grown, fresh, unprocessed, pesticide/chemical/GMO Free, nutrient-dense and seasonal foods. We will be offering classes to assist in making a transition away from processed foods! Information including a synopsis of the classes and schedules will be included with your order at Market pickup. I will also post the information on the Weblog later in the week. By the way, did you know that you can read any past Blogs on the Weblog tab?

Speaking of classes — one of Mary’s areas of expertise is making cheese and teaching others to make cheese. She is in the process of setting those classes in motion. Expect to hear/read about availability of CheeseMaking classes very soon!

What alternative medicinals do you use to keep your family well and treat ailments? Therapeutic essential oils have been used for millennia in treatment of ills. Mary and I both know the healing properties of therapeutic oils and will also be offering classes about these amazing alternative medicinals.

I apologize for opening the Market late today! Telling you Dudley ate my Blog Entry, just doesn’t sound plausible and wouldn’t be true – so let’s just say I have been trying all day to find my creative side! Now, it is finished – I will send this and the Market will be open! Thanks for your patience.

We appreciate your support of the Market, our dedicated, LOCAL Farmers/Growers and Artisans and the local economy!

We will see you Thursday at Gwinnett Gymnastics Center between 4:30pm and 7:30 pm!

As always, Mary will have a couple of recipes featuring products she has purchased from the Market!

Joyful thoughts and bountiful blessings!
