Market Newsletter

This post expired on May 12, 2023.

Greetings All!

What a beautiful day! Blue skies and a nice breeze!

Some would say I neglected my duties as your Newsletter author – or perhaps that is just my overactive imagination! “Life happens!” and it seems that I have been swamped since the middle of last week! So, please know I appreciate your patience!

Now – If you want to skip reading my musings, which do include Market News, Weekly Specials, Farmer of the Week information, news about upcoming Events and Classes, little known facts and tidbits about ‘this and that’ then click
Take me to the Market. You can access this and other Newsletters/Blog postings by clicking on the Weblog tab on the website!

For those of you still with me, grab a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate made with rich and creamy goat milk and read on!

Happy Mother’s Day! Mary exudes wisdom and grace and has been “loved and worn into a Velveteen Mother”. I am so blessed to have her as a friend and a partner in this Market! Mary posted this on Facebook! I was so touched by it that I wanted to share it with you. It was written by Ann Voskamp and posted on her Blog “The Holy Experience”. She says: “homemaking is about making a home, not perfection…motherhood is a hallowed space..” Please click on the link and take a few minutes to read and reflect! Then click the back arrow to return to the Newsletter! Why Mother’s Day is for the Birds.

…and now, back to your regular scheduled programming…favorite Newsletter of the week!

Market pickup last Thursday was busy, busy! Mary and I were without Betsy, our favorite, efficient volunteer and boy did it make a difference! We had a good time, but we were hopping! Every week we are adding new customers to the Market and we love taking the time to meet and greet the ‘newbies’ as well as chat with our regulars! Thank you for continuing to share the Market with friends and family! You are part of the reason Heirloom Family Market is growing! That means our message of eating local, fresh products, getting to know your Farmer/Grower and where you food comes from is spreading – and we believe that is a very good thing!

Are you interested in becoming a Market Volunteer? Please call us and let us know! We will tell you all about it and how it works. (There are perks!) You can reach me at 404-432-4337 or Mary at 404-245-2919! Volunteer and get to know others in the Heirloom Living Market!

New Farmers/Growers/Artisans

Please welcome Lucy Repp an Artisan who makes Goat’s Milk Soaps! Her husband is Rusty and together they own Little Tots Estate! You have already tried the milk, you know how smooth and silky it is — check out Lucy’s deals! She offers many different fragrances! Wow together with the excellent choices from Good Shepherd Herbals you have many fragrances to choose from and no duplicates! We are blessed! Be sure and put your fragrance choice in the Product Comment Section on the Check Out Page!

Education

CheeseMaking 101 was scheduled for yesterday – but Life Happens and several class members had unexpected conflicts, so Mary has rescheduled for June 22nd – Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. There are still a couple of spaces left. Make your reservation today and join Mary for a FUN and informative class. Take home 3 different cheeses that you will prepare in class. Learn the basics so you can join in the Intermediate and Advanced Classes to be offered later this summer!

GMOOMG…! What in the World Am I Eating?
is an hour class that will explain what GMO’s are, how they are made and what foods they are in, why they are not-so-good bad for us, how to identify GMO’s in the food you purchase and how to avoid them. Great information with shopping guides! Tuesday, May 14th from 7:00pm to 8:00pm at Gwinnett Gymnastics Center! Find the class listed under Event Reservations on the Market page.

Updates

Heritage Farm just processed chickens! For those of you who make bone broth – there are chicken feet and backs! For those who haven’t tried to make your own bone broth, please ask Mary or Maryanne about this awesome, nutrient-dense food. There will be a recipe waiting for you at Market pickup on Thursday! Thanks, Greg for providing the resources with pastured chickens and grass-fed meats so that we can eat Real food and be assured of the quality!

The Produce Box offered by Doug’s Garden has great variety this week: Swiss Chard, English Peas, Turnips, White Radishes, Red Radishes, Green Onions, Broccoli Tips and huge bags of Baby Spinach and Salad Mix. Doug will include vegetables that are ready for harvest Thursday morning! The produce boxes are bountiful and the veggies beautiful, freshly harvested and delicious! Order one today! And please check in with Mary at pickup for recipes to help you make delicious meals using everything in your Produce Box!

Back River Farm has Hakurei Turnips! If you have never tried these little treasures you are in for a treat! Crispy and flavorful! I have sauteed, roasted, sliced for salads and fried to make chips! Am contemplating slicing some to dehydrate — sliced VERY thin for chips! Also doing Kale for Kale Chips! Yummy!

Russell Johnston of Johnston Family Farm has let me know that the raw, creamy fresh-frozen milk is out of stock! The GREAT news is there will be fresh ‘you-might-could-call-this-cream-if-it-weren’t-illegal-to-do-so’ “milk” this week! As much as I love Goat Milk, I cannot pass up the opportunity to get some FRESH (not frozen)“Creamy” milk from Johnston Family Farm. The girls have been feasting on new Spring grasses and the result is rich milk (cream)so rich and good you can use it to make ice cream or butter! (for your pets, of course since All raw milk is labeled for ‘Pet Consumption’ as required by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and is the only way raw milk can legally be sold in the state of Georgia.) Aw man! Dudley loves butter! It is a good thing he doesn’t know how to open the fridge…hmmm think I need to be diligent about keeping the butter keeper pushed W A Y back on the counter!

Of course children will be welcome – what better way for them to get to know how food comes to them!

A Final Thought…

Mother’s Day is coming to a close. There are those that are blessed to still have their Mother in their lives; there are those who are blessed to have their children. Please take a moment to remember those who are without either. If not a phone call or an email, say a special prayer for them. Some things we take for granted – don’t miss the opportunity to bless someone with a thought!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive and…

Again, please know that we appreciate your support of our dedicated, LOCAL Farmers/Growers and Artisans and the local economy! Please “Like” us on Facebook and continue to share the Market with family and friends!
