"Bits and Bites" November 1, 2014

For Chrome users or plain text users,
you will find this easier to read and be able to see pictures if you go to the Market and choose Weblog …it’s easier on the eyes!

Greetings Lilburn, Crossfit and Hamilton Mill Market Folks:

Oh Wow! It is chilly and windy with a little-more-than-a dusting of the white stuff covering the ground this morning! The late night, misty kind of rain, left the tree limbs wet and the cold winds over night served to freeze the rain on limbs and leaves! Although I was having a bit of non-belief about the swiftness of how time has literally flown by since August, I am now in full acceptance that we are entering into the Winter season!

The Market is now Open for ordering and if you would like to fore-go reading the Newsletter —

Hop on over to Lilburn Market

If you have your beverage of choice in hand and have a few minutes to catch up with Market news, then read on…

Azure Standard

Order Deadline for November is Tuesday, November 4th at 6:00pm

Please share this information with friends and family to ensure that we will all have this great resource available to us!

Azure Standard offers over 9,000 items of which the majority are Organic (or at the very least non-GMO)! The website can be overwhelming, especially if you are a new customer. My humble suggestion is: use the ‘search’ feature to find items that you regularly purchase from Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts or wherever and see the savings. Save them to you ‘favorites list’ so they will be easy to find next time. When I first started ordering, that is the method I used the first couple of months. When I had some ‘extra time’ online during the month, I would ‘Shop By Category’ looking at only the ones that held some interest to me. I found that these two methods helped acclimate me to the company, the website and was the best use of my time!
Now, because I have items saved to my ‘favorites list’, shopping is fast and simple! Of course I still ‘explore’ categories or check out items that others have suggested.

Another idea – if you see something that only comes in a ‘bulk’ offering, check with friends or post a notice on the Facebook Page listed below and offer to share with one or more folks! This is a great way to get extra savings and help others at the same time.

Here’s the scoop:

A Few Volunteers Still Needed

If you are interested in helping out at the Crossfit Market, please contact Market Volunteer Coordinator, Chance Claar-Pressley. You can email Chance at chancita@gmail.com . Kathy could use some help every other week between 2:00pm and 3:30pm on Thursday as Farmers drop off the ordered items and they are distributed!

Heartfelt Gratitude

“Thank You” to the Market Coordinators: Lauren Stephens at the Crossfit Market, Sarah Rockey at the Hamilton Mill Market and Kathy Barnes, at the Lilburn Market. These ladies give most of their day on Thursday to ensure that we all can enjoy the fruits of our Local Farmers labors! I know the amount of work and effort, patience and ingenuity Market Day involves and I appreciate their efforts more than words can express!

In addition I would like to thank the following folks who routinely volunteer to assist with set-up, Market and breakdown:
Geni Wallace, Bruce Wallace and sons, Susan Coker, Rebecca White, Nancy Tuck, Karen Thain, Sara Heath and Keb Barnes! And last but not least, Chance Claar-Pressley for coordinating all the great volunteers! You all “Rock”! The Market is a community and you all help keep it going!

Susan Martinson, a Market Member and All Saints Lutheran Church Member is also helping us at the Lilburn Market, setting up the Market display table as well as selling Organic, Free Trade Coffees, Teas and delicious Chocolate Bars. Do try the Midnight Sun if you like a full-bodied yummy morning coffee! All Saints is using this endeavor as a Fund Raiser, so please take a minute and check out the products. Products will be display and showcased at all of the Markets. Sue just got in “Organic Chocolate Chips” and you can check them out on Market Day! The Congregation and Pastor Stover have been wonderful friends to the Market and are very supportive of our efforts! Let’s return the favor!

Ready to be snipped and added to smoothies, salads or your favorite juice!

Doug of Doug’s Garden is still waiting for more items to harvest and hopefully will offer items on all Markets next week.

Miss Vicky of Fry Farm is offering: Delicious and adorable ‘Gold Nugget’ Winter Squash, Contneder Green Beans, Collard Greens 2 kinds of Kale and Hakuri Turnips! I really like the Hakuris sauteed in a bit of butter or dehydrated with a bit of sea salt! (wonderful alternative to chips!)

Roger and Reggie Ramos of Grow With The Flow are offering: 2 kinds of Kale at the Lilburn Market only.

Tammy and Jeff Soseby of Peacefield Farms offer hydroponically grown Beefsteak Tomatoes. You can still have a taste of summer in your salads! Tammy is also offering some homemade scarves that are beautiful. Check them out when you are perusing the Market!

The Veggie Patch is providing a good selection of wonderful, fresh veggie offerings and have fresh Herbs listed as well! Veggies include: Arugula, Broccoli Crowns, Bok Choi, Red Carrots, 4 types of Eggplant, 3 kinds of Kale, 3 Lettuce varieties, Mizuna, Nappa Cabbage, Okra 13 varieties of Peppers from Sweet to ‘call the fire department’ HOT; Swiss Chard and The Weekly Veggie Box.

From Pork Tenderloin, (which is delicious marinated and grilled) to the many varieties of Sausage, Pork Chops and Longaniza (hot dogs), to any cut of Beef you want, Lynda has us covered! Additional Chicken and Beef will be available next week after Lynda picks up from the processor.

David and Shalley Carrell of Carrell Farms Check out their offerings from their Bulk Ground Buff to Steaks and Roasts! Try a Brisket smoked! Delicious! Shalley makes a wonderful line of Natural Skin Care Products using the tallow from the Water Buffalo. Her Face Creams are luscious! A couple of weeks ago I tried the Tallow Foot Butter which has Peppermint Essential Oil in it. Oh, Wow! Feels great and my feet and looking and feeling better!

Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed.

My Daily Bread From Challah to Sourdough Bread, Chocolate Zucchini Bread to Cookies, Dabrielle’s Organic, Fresh Baked Goods are sure to please.

Dabrielle has created a wonderful Gluten Free Greek Pasta Salad that is a real taste treat served cold or warm!

Please remember that in order for My Daily Bread to deliver from their wonderful Bakery and Farm located in Cleveland, GA, we must meet a minimum, so be sure and get your items ordered today!

Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks has created a fabulous new cookie! Almond Sandies and they are buttery, have just the right amount of crunchy texture and are wonderful with a glass of milk, a hot cup of coffee of tea! Although Marie doesn’t have items listed on the Market this week, look for her items on the Farmers’ Sale Table!

Jay and Patti of Dances With Bees have Honey offerings as well as some other great products! The Candles are made of pure beeswax and the Lady Bug is as cute as it can be! I love the rolled beeswax candles also. Patti makes some awesome Personal Care products as well!

Jay has managed to slip a couple of new products in his offerings! I ordered the BBQ Honey a month or so ago and have used it on Wings, Chicken Breasts and a Pork Tenderloin and Lamb Ribs! Oh, WOW! Try this amazing Honey/Glaze! It’s subtly spicy and smokey! Wow!

The Happy Cows belonging to Sam Jones of Cedar Rock Dairy continue to produce wonderful milk (for our pets)! The cream line on the jars these last couple of weeks has been impressive! Keep up the good work, ladies! Located in Butler, Georgia, Sam’s cows enjoy grazing on 1200 acres of this Certified Organic Farm and we are fortunate that he is willing to transport this fresh, creamy milk to us. Working together, we need to ensure that we meet a minimum order for each Market so it remains economically viable for deliveries to continue! Share the goodness of Cedar Rock Dairy milk with friends and family!

Remember, you need 3 sets of jars to keep things flowing smoothly. If you order an extra one week, you likely will be missing one the following week. The Market can no longer absorb the cost if you receive your milk in plastic and you will be charged the difference. Your jars need to be ‘sparkling clean’ and completely dry (jar and BOTH lids)!

Raw Milk Jar System
A1 vs A2 Milk

Rusty Repp of Little Tots Estate offers the sweetest goat milk I have had since I was a child, growing up in Ohio! (Did you know that Rusty is from Ohio? True!) The milk comes from Nigerian Dwarf Goats who are known to have the highest Butterfat of any milking goats! The milk from Little Tots also makes wonderful cheese! It is great for pets with stomach issues, also! To keep The Black Lab, healthy, he enjoys some everyday!

Kathy Barnes of So-Koi not only helps out at the Markets, she is also the wonderful lady that makes the great lanyards, aprons, pillowcases and tiny purse bags (for carrying your own sweeteners, salts, etc.) Check out her offerings that are all hand made with love!

Kathy is also coordinating the Group Buys for Real Salt and Einkorn Wheat. Sign up sheets will be on the Check out table at each Market.

… this and that …

I continually thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on me in my life which definitely includes the Market and all of the wonderful folks I have come to know. I am here to serve you, the Members and the Farmers.

The Black Lab is snuggled at my feet in his warm bed here in the office. To my great surprise he significantly cut short his usual 2 hour foray in the yard this morning! Could it be that his old bones are feeling this cold weather? I better make sure he gets enough Bone Broth to help keep his joints supple!

The colder weather inspired some serious kitchen time yesterday that will carry on through the weekend! Beef and Lamb and Water Buffalo Bones were roasted yesterday and put on for Bone Broth. Part of the broth will be made into a yummy Veggie Soup with Green Beans, Carrots, Onions, Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Corn and whatever other goodies I find in the freezer from the Harvest this past Summer! I defrosted a Eye of Round Roast yesterday and put a rub on it this morning, so it will go in the oven later today. I am thinking of serving it with Sweet Potatoes, Spinach and Tomato Salad with goat cheese, Quinoa and some frozen Peaches for dessert!

A new batch of Tea for Kombucha is on the stove and I have Beets to start some Beet Kvass and Nappa Cabbage to start some Sauerkraut. What goodies are you making this weekend?

I wish you all a happy weekend and a wonderful week! Don’t forget to Vote on Tuesday and while you are at it Fly the Flag!

It has been necessary to establish minimums for each Market. If the minimum is not met and you have ordered items, you will receive an email letting you know that your items cannot be delivered. Be sure and check out the offerings of Water Buffalo from Carrell Farm. A roast would be wonderful with this cool Fall weather!

Dabrielle of My Daily Bread has Blueberry Jam and Pear Preserves listed on the Weekly Specials and they are always a treat! It is Fall and who doesn’t like a good cup of Tea with Spelt Pumpkin Muffins or Apple Bread? Yum!

Fry Farm does not list any offerings this week as Vicky and Steve’s ‘grands’, their daughter and her husband are here visiting from their Mission in England. They will be back strong next week!

Doug’s Garden is seeing an increase in his harvests, so check out his offerings and be sure and peruse the Farmers’ Sale Table to see what is available on Market Day!

Peacefield Farm has added Radishes and Dried Tomatoes to their offerings!

The Veggie Patch always has a good variety of veggies and lots of peppers from mild to VERY hot! CHeck out the “Red” carrots!

Ricky of Back River Farm has Arugula, 2 varieties of Flavorburst Peppers and Eggplant.

Grow With the Flow is offering several different kinds of Kale as well as a Gourmet Lettuce Mix.

I spoke with Lynda of B & G and she informs me that she will be re-stocked with whole chickens and parts in 2 weeks. She still has Beef and Pork listed!

Marie of Bakery on Brooks has been sick and I am requesting prayers for her quick recovery!

For Chrome users or plain text users,

Greetings Lilburn Market Members:

I hope this finds you all well and you enjoyed the wonderful weather this weekend with family and/or friends!

Market Update

Vicky and Steve of Fry Farm are adding to their offerings as the Fall crops come in! This week they have some new Winter Veggies for us. They include: Arugula, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, ‘Black Tuscan’ as well as ‘Red Russian’ Kale, Popcorn and French Breakfast Radishes. Have you every sauteed Radishes? Try it with these and I think you will be totally surprised at how wonderful they are fixed this way! Also the Golden Nugget Squash are quite good and I am enjoying baking them! The Black Lab has been enjoying them too!

I spoke with Doug of Doug’s Garden yesterday and although he does have some items coming in, it is a little slow right now! He hopes to have more items in the next couple of weeks!

Ricky Brown of Back River Farm is also waiting for Winter Veggies to harvest. At present, Ricky is offering: Chocolate Peppers, Flavorburst Bell Peppers, Eggplant and Arugula! Keep an eye out for other items in the next week!

Andrew and his crew at The Veggie Patch have a plethora of Winter Seedlings, (oh, how I miss my garden!) Fow The current harvest include Arugula, Broccoli Crowns, Cucumbers, 4 varieties of Eggplant, 3 types of Kale, 2 Lettuces, Napa Cabbage, Okra, Sweet Bell Peppers and many types of Hot Peppers — from mild to call-the-fire-department-my mouth-is-on-fire HOT!!! They are also offering a Salad Mix, Swiss Chard, Squash, Tatsoi and Mized Cherry Tomatoes. Also, don’t forget to check out their Herb offerings. In addition, they list some Ready to Eat Products…sauces, soups, pickles..be sure and check them out!

Jeff and Tammy of Peachfield Farm are offering ‘Beefsteak Tomatoes’ this week and Jeff tells me they will have more offerings in the near future. Fried Green Tomatoes have been a staple these last few weeks and they are wonderful. I didn’t see any listed this week; however, the Beefsteaks are flavorful and I love having good tomatoes in October! We will have these until Spring because they are grown hydroponically!

I haven’t checked with Marie of Bakery on Brooks to know if we will have items for sale at Markets this week; however, when I send the Reminder email, I will let you know!

Dabrielle of My Daily Bread has both Blueberry Jam and Pear Preserves on Special this week! Also, Challah is now available in the Market offerings. This bread always looks so ‘picture perfect’ and folks love the texture and taste! Unfortunately since I am gluten free, I have to listen as others RAVE about this great bread!

Because Dabrielle bakes with Organic ingredients, preservatives are never used in any of her products! So, how do you keep them fresh? Take out what you will use Market day and the next day and freeze the remainder. Before using what you then take from the freezer, let it come to room temp – and you are good to go! One trick that I use: I make a foil pouch and put a couple of slices of bread in it (side by side)and pop it in the toaster oven on 250 for about 10 minutes! This warms the bread and it really tastes like it is freshly baked!

Volunteers

Please consider helping Kathy Barnes, your Market Coordinator on pickup day! She works very hard to organize, setup and serve your needs! She could use assistance between 2:00pm and 4:00pm when she is setting up and Market and accepting deliveries from Farmers.
Thanks to Geni Wallace who assists every other week with setup!

Thanks also to Susan Coker and Sue Martinson who are always on hand to help with checkout. Nancy Tuck, Rebecca White and Bruce Wallace assist with breakdown of Market. Of course KEB BARNES is always on hand at the end of Market to help out! You all have my gratitude!

If you are interested in helping out at the Market, please contact Market Volunteer Coordinator, Chance Claar-Pressley. You can email Chance at chancita@gmail.com . We love helpers and Chance loves coordinating this effort for us! Please let her know you intend to help and she will gladly put you on the schedule and notify Maryanne and the Market Coordinators.

…this and that…

Markets orders have always varied slightly from week to week. The last month shows a good week (meeting a minimum of $650) to doubling the minimum the following week, to NOT meeting the minimum. I am at a loss to explain this or plan for the huge fluctuations. Your input is needed and appreciated…
